Using genAI to streamline NAB’s paralegal tasks
Impact made whilst working for NAB
The problem
NAB’s paralegals spend 1 hour on average, reviewing a single trust deed, often having to review multiple TD’s a day. We aimed to reduce this time so paralegals could focus on more complex tasks.

How we designed for NAB’s first ever legal tool using genAI
Designing the tool
Understanding a paralegals workflow
This involved understanding detail around the trust deed clauses and the significance of each clause.
I designed the tool accordingly, marrying up with constraints of LLM. For example, designing for edge cases where LLM could not read a wet signature.
Some other findings from the research which were applied to the design:
“Universal Powers” was something the paralegals would check manually regardless of LLM output, → therefore we de-prioritised this feature and were able to save time and money on build
Execution of contract was vital, paralegal could not go ahead with trust deed checks without these details → therefore these details were surfaced upfront
Correct taxonomy that makes sense for the paralegals
Evaluative research
Once tool was designed, I lead 1:1 interviews with paralegals to finesse usability and test 2 overarching hypotheses:
Hypothesis 1 - Transperancy
To build confidence in the tool, paralegals must have full transparency. (Eg. Is it the paralegal’s job to QA the tool?)
Hypothesis 2 - Confidence whilst using the tool
We know that paralegals have a responsibility to deliver correct material, therefore confidence plays an important role in a paralegals review process.
We hypothesised the business should set parameters/standard for paralegals to follow and trust. (It’s the business’ job to vet the tool).
Key Findings
Full transparency around clauses is not necessary.
Paralegals can intuit what is easy vs complex. They will always take time up front to gauge how the tool handles the spectrum of easy vs complex.
Trust in the tool would be best issued by the business Because this tool is vetted by the business, paralegals will have inherant trust that this will do the job it’s intended for.

The MVP (Legal Document Review)
Whilst UI is quite plain, the usability of this interface mirrors the process’ that paralegals take when reviewing a trust deed, keeping workflow as streamlined as possible.
Key impact
Reduced average time of trust deed review from 1 hour to 5 minutes.
First tool that NAB has designed using AI for trust deed reviews
Through my research, we were able to de-prioritise certain features which saved cost and build time
